The Airconditioner

Back at the Bakers this weekend.  The Bakers built this house 22 years ago, the upstairs air conditioner (where I sleep until my basement room gets finished)  has never been replaced and was almost dead last summer.  Last summer was a particularly brutal summer and the A/C just wasn't cutting it.  Elaine, out of love for me, twisted Joe's arm into replacing the A/C a couple weeks ago before summer came, bless her heart!  So there is a brand spankin new A/C installed and man its nice.  Only problem is the thermostat got moved out of my room into the public hallway and thats where this story begins.....

Elaine likes the thermostat set at 74 degrees, which I am very comfortable with during the day.  But us Eubanks kids like it a little cooler during sleep time.  In fact, my brother Nick puts the thermostat down to 62 every night before bed.  Now I'm not that crazy but I am quite pleased at sleeping in the 72 degree area. A couple weeks when I first slept over after the installation of the new A/C, I went upstairs and turned it down from 74 to 72, and immediately Elaine caught me--she has special senses when it comes to air temperature and thermostats, trust me.

Last weekend I came up with a bit of sneaky way around the problem.  I usually go to bed after Elaine and so when I went to bed last week I just casually turned down the air to 72 degrees and hit the sack.  Then I would wake up between 5-6 in the morning and turn back the A/C to 74 before Elaine woke up and caught me.  This process worked quite well and gave me a few quite chuckles as I realized my brilliance in scamming the system so simply.  hahaha

However things turned sour this morning.  I awoke a little later than normal, around 630-640.  Realizing my error I quickly stepped out of my room to change the thermostat back before I was caught in the act.  To my dismay, the thermostat was already turned back to 74.  A horrible feeling sank to the bottom of my stomach as I realized that that ever aware Elaine had already risen for the day, sensed the wrong A/C setting and turned it back up.  I tried to go back to bed but being distraught as I was, I sank into depression knowing I was caught.  I couldn't sleep but just laid there with my eyes closed hoping I had been dreaming.  I finally mustered the courage to arise and go downstairs to start my day.  I said a quick prayer that I could find mercy and forgiveness this day and opened the door and went down the stairs into the kitchen.  With efforts to evade Elaine early, it was soon inevitable.  Nothing yet but the charges will come and nothing to admit but GUILTY, GUILTY AS CHARGED!
